Additional Information

Willi Nass born in Hamburg on 17th January 1899. He was a German artist.

Nass attended the Hamburg School of Arts and Crafts (Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule) where he studied under Ernst Either (1867-1955)

Under the directorship of Prof. Max Sauerlandt (1880-1934), Nass had a highly acclaimed (1932) solo exhibition at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg. In 1933, the Hamburger Sezessionisten (Hamburg Secessionists) annual Spring Exhibition was closed by National Socialist (Nazi) Party and Max Sauerlandt was removed from his position as director of Landeskunstschule (University of Fine Arts, Hamburg). In 1937, under the 'Degenerate Art' (Entartete Kunst) policy, eighteen of Nass' works were confiscated from the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (Museum of Arts and Crafts, Hamburg) and destroyed.

After the War, Nass assisted his friend Emil Maetzel (1877-1955). Maetzel was appointed the second Chairman of the re-established Hamburg Secessionists in 1948. The group dissolved in 1952.

Willi Nass died in Hamburg on 19th February 1966, aged 67.

Examples of Nass' work are held in the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
